Originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and 2001, Shenmue I & II is an open-world action-adventure title combining jujitsu, investigation, RPG elements and unforgettable mini-games. It pioneered many aspects of modern video gaming, including open-world city exploration, and was the game that invented the limited-time event, better known as "Quick Time Event" (QTE).
It was one of the first games to feature a persistent open world with day and night cycles, weather changes, opening and closing shops with NPCs moving as they pleased. Its epic, captivating story and dynamic world have created a generation of die-hard fans, and the game is frequently included in "greatest games of all time" lists.
The story
A quest for revenge. In 1986, the young jujitsu artist, Ryo Hazuki, returns to the dojo of his father, Iwao Hazuki, who is assassinated in front of him by a Chinese man named Lan Di. Lan Di has stolen a mysterious artifact known as the Dragon Mirror. Ryo then swears to avenge his father's death and goes after Lan Di.
Shenmue I
The first game in the Shenmue series tells the beginning of Ryo's journey around Yokosuka, Japan to gather clues to his father's murder and, along the way, faces ruthless gangsters.
Shenmue II
In the sequel, Ryo's quest continues this time by crossing the seas to go to Hong Kong, China. Ryo explores the criminal world further and meets martial arts masters who will help him on his journey and offer him crucial information regarding his father's murder. Ryo will then have to unravel the mysteries of the Dragon Mirror which his father had kept secret.
