Arcania: Gothic 4 is the fourth installment of the legendary series of computer role-playing games Gothic. Unlike the previous parts, the Piranha Bytes studio is no longer responsible for the production of the program. The publisher of the series, JoWooD, after numerous vicissitudes, decided to hire developers from Spellbound Studios, who have titles such as Desperados: Wanted Dead OR Alive or Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood. They gained experience in creating serious cRPG products in the 90s of the previous century (the Das Schwarze Auge trilogy, also known as Realms of Arkania).

Arcania takes place ten years after Twilight of the Gods.in which the Nameless Hero, seeing the approaching conflict between the leaders of Myrtana, recaptured from the hands of the orcs, decided to intervene once again. As a result of these events, the hero finally took independent rule over the united lands and proclaimed himself king, taking the name of Rhobar III. The player takes on the role of a new character, who will also be called the Nameless One.
